Teacher Faces Fraud Charges

SNELLVILLE -- A fourth grade teacher at Anderson-Livsey Elementary School has been charged with insurance fraud, according to a warrant taken out by the state department of insurance.

Doshia Dianetta Mears of Duluth was charged in an arrest warrant dated Sept. 8 with receiving $12,739.87 in disability payments, a felony, while "gainfully employed" by Gwinnett County Public Schools.

Bail was set at $25,000 for Mears, who bonded out Sept. 10.

A spokesman for the school system said Mears is not currently in a classroom. She has been on leave since Aug. 1, according to Jorge Quintana, director of media relations.

Quintana said the school district's human resources division launched an internal investigation as well "in light of the concerns brought forward by the insurance commissioner's office."

The warrant stated that "the accused did receive $12,739.87 in fraudulent disability payments."

The warrant also stated that the offense occurred Aug. 2, 2010. The school system hired Mears on Aug. 1, 2010.
