Child caught in bus door uninjured, Barrow official reports

AUBURN -- Officials with Barrow County Schools are investigating how an elementary school student's backpack became caught in a school bus door as the driver pulled away from her residence Friday afternoon.

The Auburn Elementary School student had disembarked the bus when the driver pulled forward not realizing the girl's book bag was caught in the door, said Dr. Wanda Creel, Barrow County Schools superintendent.

The girl was not injured, Creel said.

The incident took place on Kilcrease Road in Auburn. An incident report says the bus moved forward about 41 feet.

Emergency responders were called to the scene as school administrators and counselors contacted parents of the remaining students on the bus with news of the incident, Creel said.

"The student was at school today," Creel told the Daily Post on Monday. "An investigation is going on right now."

Creel stressed that no employee had been terminated. The school system's director of transportation met with the student's guardian before school Monday and presented the girl with a new book bag, Creel said.
