Monthly trash fee goes up for Gwinnett

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Trash pick-up will cost more in 2012 for Gwinnett residents.

But after an initial assessment on tax bills in 2010 for 18 months of service, the assessment on this year's bills will be lower.

According to county officials, the increase of 30 cents per month is due to terms of a contract reached with hauling companies last year as part of a court settlement. It was calculated based on increases in the consumer price index and rising fuel prices, a press release said.

That brings the total monthly fee to $18.16 for the collection of trash, bulky items and recycling. For the year, that comes to $217.92, which will be charged on the tax bills due to be sent in the mail next week. Payments are due in November.

More information on the solid waste and recycling program in place for all residents of unincorporated Gwinnett is available at www.gwinnettcounty.com.

Its a shame that people are complaining about 30 cents per month. Ever since last July, i always thought it was a great idea, to have one truck come down the road on one day. When you have neighbors like i used to have you would respect the new law. They would wait until 3am to put their garbage in mine!!!!!

All tax revenues are fungible. (one tax dollar looks just like any other tax dollar and can replace any other tax dollar and be spent like any other tax dollar.) If Gwinnett hadn't spent all that reserve fund money on the Bert Nasuti boondoggle (bush league baseball) stadium - which still requires additional funding from the county because it still isn't even close to paying for itself, perhaps the county would find itself with additional revenues and wouldn't have to raise the monthly trash fee.

It's the principal. now I am paying $3+ dollars more per month than when it free enterprise. Plus I am now and always have been opposed to it being put on my tax bill.

Lesson 1 I learned early in life. The government can NEVER, EVER do anything better than free enterprise. Competition is the word lacking from this whole scene.

Put this in the hands of politicians and you just know the service would go down and the price would go up. Let's get this stuff out of the hands of politicians and back into the hands of homeowners. Think you are not at the mercy of bureaucrats? Just try calling the county and complaining about your service and see the runaround you will get and nothing will change.

Get government out of garbage control and out of my pocket.

How dare they add 4.60 a year to my tax bill. I think they should furlough some trash picker-uppers, or do a study/survey on how they can take the neccessary funding out of their employees pockets. They should just be happy that they have a job.

I've been ticked over this garbage program since the beginning. And this is just another bit of torture. I'm sure next year there will be another excuse for increasing it again. Oh, and by the way, it now takes two trucks to pick up my trash instead of the one before the program! The property tax bill now has, state, county, trash, parks and rec, and property all billed at once.

No news here. Since the government take over of trash service in this county, quality went down (irregular pick up times, homeowner picks up the trash after the trashman has picked up, etc...) initially my cost went up and now the cost goes up again! This sounds ordinary, not worthy of newsworthiness. I concur with the comments of NorCross Dot and Buzz G. Maybe this is trickle down "change we can believe in"

This whole trash deal is a farce. It is nothing more than the BOC raising your taxes. Before the plan was forced upon us trash service was a lot cheaper and better. Instead of one truck coming through we have 4. They have a recycle truck that goes down one side then the other. Another truck that picks up the garbage truck that is operated by one person. He must do one side at a time. so that is 4 trips dow the same street. We live in the rural part of the county and have roads that have few houses on them. Have noticed a lot more illegal since this plan has been in effect. Bottom line get the garbage business of the county government.Return to free entreprise. Then vote them out. They have an 8 year agreement with the haulers. Break that contract now and return it to free enterprise.
