Wesleyan Wolves (5-A)
Coach: Franklin Pridgen
Last week: Lost to Elbert County 27-10
Twiggs County Cobras (7-A)
Coach: Josh Lowe
Last week: Lost to Butler-Augusta 57-8
A drive of two-plus hours to Jeffersonville seems daunting, but it’s not complicated for a Wesleyan team that traveled twice that far to beat Seminole County in the season opener. Both long road trips should prepare head coach Franklin Pridgen’s team for region play and the postseason.
The Wolves lost to Class AA Elbert County last week, but Pridgen was far from discouraged.
“I wasn’t disappointed at all,” he said. “We gave up 21 points off of offensive mistakes and they scored 27. What does that tell you? I think our defense was fantastic. Elbert was athletic and we were outmanned at every position, but the kids never stopped fighting. They never stopped hustling. We were physical on both sides of the ball and never gave up.”
Josh King was a big part of that physical play, grading out at 92 percent at center and making seven tackles (and causing a fumble) on defense. Eric Rappe also stood out on both sides of the ball, while Eric Sunderman (10 catches for 113 yards) continued his breakout season at wide receiver.
Twiggs went 11-2 in 2009, when Wesleyan scheduled this matchup, but has struggled in recent years. The Cobras were 2-8 in 2010 and have lost their first two games this season by a combined score of 105-14.
“They still have speed and still have athletes,” Pridgen said of Twiggs. “We’re not going down there thinking it’s going to be easy.”
Last meeting: Wesleyan won 33-0 last year
