Norcross firefighters battle large trash fire

NORCROSS -- Firefighters doused a large debris pile that caught fire at a recycling center in the 3000 block of Kingston Court in Norcross about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The blaze burned a large pile of ground-up tree stumps, heavy timbers and construction debris at a center called Waste Management, said Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge.

No injuries were reported. The exact cause is undetermined, Rutledge said.

Around noon Wednesday, fire crews were flowing in water to keep the flames down, generating heavy smoke in the area. No structures were damaged.

A trackhoe was used to pull apart the debris to extinguish deep-seated hotspots.

"The situation is under control, but may take several hours to completely put the fire out and for the smoke to clear," Rutledge said just before noon.
