SUWANEE -- A final count of Gwinnett County Public Schools students showed a total of 162,589 -- 130 students more systemwide than officials projected for the 2011-12 school year.
It's a growth of 5,630 students since the district's first student tally on Aug. 9.
Media Relations Director Jorge Quintana said the latest count "shows that school district planners were right on target in terms of system growth."
He added that while the district is over its projected student enrollment, "it is not a significant number when you take into account the size of the district."
Quintana said district planners were "off by less than 1 percent."
He said the school district will use the final enrollment data to determine if any adjustments of resources are needed.
Schools individually conducted counts of students and reported to the central office.
Counts were held Aug. 9, 15, 22, 29 and Sept. 6.
The previous year, enrollment was tallied at 161,130 after Labor Day.
Historically, the number of students peaks during the fourth or fifth month of school.
