Beat The Heat This Weekend With Ice Skating Event At Duluth Ice Forum

DULUTH -- Need a break from 90-degree weather?

Watching local figures skaters compete on the ice could be a cool way to beat the heat this weekend. And best of all -- it's free.

The Georgia Figure Skating Club is playing host to the 2011 Peach Open/Classic competition at the Duluth Ice Forum, 2300 Satellite Boulevard, Saturday and Sunday.

It is a sanctioned U.S. Figure Skating Association event, which means spectators who show up will "see some very fancy moves," according to the club's vice president, Jamie Angelucci.

"The public is welcome," Angelucci said. "We're hoping for a good turnout."

More than 150 skaters from all levels of competition plan to begin skating today. It's a qualifying event for regional competitions.

The event runs Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 2:40 p.m.

According to its website, the Georgia Figure Skating Club aims to "encourage instruction, practice and advancement of the members in free skating, dancing and all types of figure skating."
