Gwinnett falls back to tie for Wild Card

NORFOLK, Va. -- Julio Teheran dug a hole and Jairo Asencio made sure the G-Braves stayed in it as two of the team's top pitchers turned in rocky performances against the Norfolk Tides.

The Atlanta Braves' top pitching prospect and recently crowned IL pitcher and rookie of the year Teheran, lasted just three innings allowing six runs off six hits and walking an unheard of six to pick up his third Class AAA loss of the season in the Gwinnett Braves 9-4 loss at Norfolk. The loss is the second straight for the G-Braves and drops them back to a tie for the International League's Wild Card with Lehigh Valley.

Despite the rough start, the G-Braves attemped to rally. They scored a pair of runs in the second and one each in the seventh and eight to cut the deficit to 6-4 thanks to four scoreless innings from Ben Swaggerty. But trailing by two runs, the G-Braves closer Asencio followed the starter Teheran with a rough outing. He allowed three runs, two earned, off four hits in the eighth inning as the Tides put the game away.

Wilkin Ramirez led the Gwinnett offense with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored on a 2-for-4 night. Jeff Fiorentino, Diory Hernandez and Matt Young all picked up two hits in the loss. Gwinnett heads to Charlotte for two games today and Saturday and returns home Sunday and Monday to end the regular season.
