After a disappointing opening to the season last week, the task doesn’t get any easier for the Lions when they travel to South Carolina to take on Southside Christian.
The Sabres have a high-powered passing game led by quarterback John Walker (43-70-1, 617 yds., 6 TDs) and receivers Jared Layne (525 yds. total offense, 7 TDs) and Austin Kimberly (14-139).
That should prove quite a challenge to a Lions secondary which must depend on youngsters like sophomore Matthew Glisson to grow up in a hurry.
“(The secondary) will be tested,” Battaglia said. “Glisson had a great game (last week), and he’ll have to have another great game. ... I think we’ll be OK. We match up fairly well (with the Sabres).”
Perhaps, but after such a rough start to the season, Battaglia is looking for improvements across the board from this Lions. That includes the offense, led by quarterback Marshall Williams and receivers Glisson and Lew Stephens.
“I think we’ll try to throw a little bit more (this week),” Battaglia said. “We need to force them to not be able to pack the box against us.
“We’ve just got to go back to the basics and make sure we’re doing everything right.”
