Captain America: The First Avenger 3-disc 3-D Blu-ray (PG-13)
Movie: 3 out of 4 stars
Disc: 3 1/2 out of 4 stars
Marvel comics purists would have preferred this to come out prior to the first "Iron Man" but that would have also been a big commercial gamble. Providing the springboard for "the Avengers" saga, "Captain America" is a sometimes inspired, competently produced action flick that chooses story and characters over explosions and effects. Benefiting from a superb villain (Hugo Weaving as the Nazi Red Skull) and a welcomed "Indiana Jones" period setting (the 1940s), the movie admirably honors its source material -- a rarity in the comic book genre.
