GRAYSON -- Gwinnett police have determined a 76-year-old Loganville man fatally shot his aged sister, who was in failing health, before turning the gun on himself in the parking lot of their longtime church Sunday.
Police on Monday identified the siblings as Clarence Porter and Avis M. Whitley, 85. They resided together on Village View Circle in Loganville. Whitley had suffered a severe stroke several weeks ago and was in poor health, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter.
Police responded to a 911 call before services began Sunday at the First Baptist Church of Grayson at 2142 Loganville Highway, near the city's downtown business area.
Responding officers found the siblings dead in a white 1996 Mercury Villager van in the parking lot.
"The homicide investigators determined that this was a murder-suicide perpetrated by Mr. Porter by shooting Ms. Whitely in the head and then turned the gun on himself inside the van," Ritter said.
Investigators have not determined a motive for Porter's alleged actions, Ritter said. The investigation continues.
