School calendar for 2012-13 released

SUWANEE -- The Gwinnett County school board approved a 2012-13 school year calendar this week during the officials' monthly board meeting.

The school board voted unanimously Thursday to approve the document, which calls for the academic year to start Aug. 6, 2012, and to end on May 22, 2013.

The calendar includes a weeklong break at Thanksgiving, and winter break will be from Dec. 20-Jan. 1.

Jan. 2 will be a teacher planning and staff development day.

Spring semester begins Jan. 3, with spring break slated for April 8-12.

The calendar also includes two furlough days, the same as last year. Planned furlough days for teachers and school personnel are Oct. 8 and March 11.

Other holidays include Independence Day, Labor Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Memorial Day.

The schools have all kinds of money except for the teachers. Give them 35 in a classroom and furlough days. The County office has about 100 people who do nothing for our children but collect BIG salaries.

Yes, there are still furlough days. And the teachers report back on July 30! First day for the students is Aug. 6. In DeKalb and Cobb, the teachers go back on Aug. 6 and the students on Aug. 13. Plus the Christmas break is cut short. Why the big deal to end before Memorial Day? Teachers returning on July 30 is ridiculous. With teachers teaching summer school and/or being required to attend summer staff development classes, there's not much of a 2012 summer. But the school board knows teachers won't complain because they worry about their jobs. Maybe the PTA will create enough pressure to create a calendar change. Not so smart to release a calendar like this before the SPLOST vote.
