The Aurora Theatre presents 'Mixed Nuts' for Funny Fridays

LAWRENCEVILLE -- After a long week, there is nothing better than to let out a few chuckles to release some stress. The Aurora Theatre offers Funny Fridays once a month and tonight it presents the female comedienne group "Mixed Nuts," featuring Sue Ryerson, Mia Jackson and Debra Cole.

These ladies of laughter are no strangers to the stage. Ryerson, Jackson and Cole have performed on NBC, BET, Oxygen Network, ESPN, Comcast and CNN as well as smaller venues, including the Aurora.

"It's always been a great experience here and the audience is always receptive," Cole said about Lawrenceville's downtown theater. "There are some people there who know us at the Aurora. It's always a good stage."

The group's jokes range from pregnancy to menopause because they are from all walks of life. Ryerson is a baby boomer who likes to talk about a variety of topics, including the issues women go through after the age of 40 such as mammograms. The witty Jackson explains her weight-loss plans and other problems to the audience, while Cole seeks humor in other things in life, such as her mother. One thing is for sure, they're not going to fill the night with man-bashing.

"It's a male dominated industry. Whatever they (male comics) said we (female comics) do becomes the narrative," Cole said. "Take a look at some successful women in comedy: Wanda Sykes, Ellen DeGeneres, Joan Rivers ... none of them male-bash. I have more to say about my mom than a man."

She added, "I don't write about men in context except for the ones I've been married to, but it's about who they were as a person."

There will be two showings tonight for Mixed Nuts Comedy at 7:15 and 9:15 p.m.

McCray's Tavern will be staffed for the show offering a full bar to guests. This show is not suitable for anyone under 18.
