Swine and Dandy Charity Cook-off set for Saturday

DULUTH -- Barbecued ribs, chicken, pork butt and brisket will be served in Duluth at the Swine and Dandy Charity Cook-Off this Saturday. Proceeds will benefit four Gwinnett-based charities: the Duluth Co-op, Family Promise, Pregnancy Resource Center of Gwinnett and Rainbow Village.

"People can come out and enjoy some October sunshine and cool air. We're going to have things out there for kids and grown-ups alike to entertain themselves," said Stewart Cink, event coordinator and professional golfer in the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) tour.

Cink's wife, Lisa, is a member of the organization heading up the event, Women's Club of Sugarloaf Country Club Charities, Inc. Since Cink is a barbecue lover and wanted to do a charity event different than a golf tournament, he and Lisa decided to plan the barbecue cook-off. He is excited to provide other barbecue fans the chance to come enjoy smoking meats while supporting charity.

"If you like barbecue, which a lot of people around our area are fascinated in some way by the cooking or eating of barbecue, then it will be a good chance to come out and see what the pros do," Cink said.

Most of the barbecue will be prepared on site by 28 teams. Some of the teams are Brown's BBQ, Decatur Pit Masters, Bubba's Backyard BBQ, Steel Kookin and Stormin Norman.

At 10:30 a.m. the Peoples' Choice competition will commence, allowing the public's favorite to win an award. About 24 teams have agreed to compete with their pulled pork. For $10 the public can enter the People's Choice, and enjoy about seven samples of pork before casting their vote.

Throughout the day there will also be four competitions for each meat category for the professional and "backyard" teams. A panel of 32 judges will select top entries. Twenty-four of those judges are certified by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS), International Barbeque Cookers Association (IBCA) or the Memphis Barbeque Network (MBN).

"We wanted to make an authentic judging panel that really knows their stuff, unlike people like me who just really like barbecue," Cink said.

Judges will be making their selections based on what the barbecue looks like, what it tastes like, the tenderness of the meat and how it was prepared.

Other than the great barbecue, there will be array of family friendly activities such as inflatables, small carnival-type rides, a cakewalk and pumpkin painting. There will also be popular brews available and live country and blue grass music.

"Most of all, it's about spending time together," Cink said. "Bringing the kids out on a Saturday afternoon, we can play for a few hours and enjoy some great food and some sunshine -- that's priceless. It's building memories."
