LAWRENCEVILLE -- A contractor has been picked for the $37 million project to clear one of Gwinnett's most congested intersections.

With construction expected to begin in the spring, crews from G.P.'S Enterprises Incorporated of Auburn will work to convert two intersections along Ga. Highway 316 to interchanges.

The project will create limited access along the highway at Ga. 20 and Collins Hill Road, near Georgia Gwinnett College. It is expected to improve safety and ease congestion.

"This project will build one interchange or exit to allow traffic from 316 to access 20 or to access Collins Hill Road using a system of long ramps, called collector distributor lanes," Todd McDuffie, district engineer of the Georgia Department of Transportation. "The existing signalized intersections at State Route 20 and at Collins Hill Road will be removed as the interchange is finished. It is similar to the system we have along I-85 from SR 120 down to Pleasant Hill Road. You get off the mainline of I-85 south at SR 120 and use the parallel roads to access the exit you need."

After months of reviewing bids for the project, the Auburn company was selected Thursday for the work, which will add 2.237 miles of new roadway and two new bridges over Ga. 316.

Construction is expected to begin in the spring and is scheduled to conclude by the end of 2014. Updates on lane closures and traffic impacts will be released later.

Please tell me this group will be held accountable and get this project finished on time and with in budget. Unlike the fools that are building the bridge over I-85 and Gravel Springs Rd. That group should be banned from all future bids in Gwinnett.

Awesome News. My only negative comment is I wish they were going to do this with the Hwy 29 intersection as well.

I agree that this is great news...REALLY great news...

My only wish is that there was viable and dependable high-frequency commuter rail service on the CSX rail line that runs through Dacula, Lawrenceville and Auburn between Atlanta and Athens so that I won't have to sit in the massive traffic jams until the project is completed.

I also wish that the timeline to turn complete the project to convert 316 into an expressway between Lawrenceville and Athens could be moved up substantially from sometime before 2035.

I would say that I would be even be willing to pay a toll in return for seeing the deadly at-grade intersections and stoplights eliminated, a 70-75 m.p.h. speed limit and the road upgraded to interstate standards before the end of the decade, but the state's extremely idiotic implementation of toll lanes on I-85 so extremely unpopular that I doubt that we'll ever see tolls proposed ever again, even where severely needed like on 316.
