River Ridge's patient track to region competition means that it isn't Lanier's typical non-region foe. The Knights are in their fourth season of non-region play, allowing ample time to build the program before stepping up to the next level.

"They've only lost one game this season against varsity schools and a lot of their games have been blowouts," Lanier head coach Billy Wells said of River Ridge.

The Longhorns don't have a four-year window like River Ridge. They are in their second year of non-region play, meaning their competition will be much tougher beginning in 2012. But Lanier has made great strides toward that goal this season, going 5-2 overall and 2-1 in varsity play (with the lone loss to Mountain View). It defeated previously unbeaten North Gwinnett's JV squad last week.

"Once our kids got a taste of what it was like to play on Friday nights, that became their focus," Wells said.

Lanier is without standout lineman Brian Krause, who is likely out for the season with an injury. But Wells still has plenty of confidence with his lines, led by two-way contributor Chauncey West. Jesse Landers and Ricky Viengxay have played well lately on defense, while Kevin Clark has done a nice job in place of injured tailback Donte Borders. Borders, the team's leading rusher, is back this week.
