Arson ruled in fire at vacant Duluth house

DULUTH -- Investigators have ruled the Wednesday fire at a vacant Duluth home -- believed to be the second in the last month -- as an act of arson.

Gwinnett County firefighters responded to the home on the 2300 block of Edge Court at about noon Wednesday, finding flames shooting from the roof over the garage, spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge said. The blaze was quickly brought under control, Rutledge said, but not before it caused "significant" damage.

Investigators soon grew suspicious.

"There were no utilities to the home and no other reason for a fire to have started," Rutledge said.

Though they have not released information about possible suspects, investigators officially ruled the fire arson Wednesday evening and cited a previous incident at the home.

According to investigators, the property owner visited the house Monday and found that someone had forced entry through a back door and attempted to set a fire on the floor.

Anyone with information about either fire is asked to call Gwinnett County fire's arson and explosives investigation section at 678-518-4890 or the Georgia Arson Control hotline at 1-800-282-5804. The latter offers up to $10,000 for information leading to arrest and conviction of suspects.

"People in the neighborhood are asked to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the police," Rutledge said.
