Loganville overwhelms Winder-Barrow for 42-7 win

WINDER -- After a gritty effort last week against unbeaten Heritage, the Homecoming crowd at Winder-Barrow entered W. Clair Harris Stadium Friday night envisioning an upset against visiting Loganville. But once again, they left disappointed.

Bernard Merriweather rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns to lead Loganville (4-3, 4-3 Region 8-AAAA) to a 42-7 victory over winless Winder-Barrow (0-7, 0-7).

Untimely turnovers have doomed the Bulldoggs all season. After committing no turnovers last week against Heritage, two critical second-quarter interceptions by Loganville turned the game and sparked the Red Devils.

With Winder-Barrow trailing 14-7 but driving midway through the second quarter, Loganville's Braxton Beck picked off a Christian Hodge pass and returned it to the Winder-Barrow 39-yard line. Two plays later Hunter Scruggs romped up the middle 31 yards for a TD and 21-7 Loganville lead.

"Anytime you turn the ball over in a close ball game when you're fighting and scrapping it's a backbreaker," said Winder-Barrow head coach David Wagner.

After a 39-yard TD pass from Loganville's Garrett Ford to Justin Pollock extended the lead to 28-7, Allen Cofer snagged the second interception thrown by Hodge in the quarter and raced 40 yards for a TD to blow the game open with just over a minute left in the half.

"Loganville's a good football team and they capitalized on two turnovers," said Wagner, "those are the type of things you cannot do."

Penalties also hindered the Doggs, erasing two long TD runs by sophomore running back Trey Russell.

"You never want penalties and they definitely plagued us tonight," Wagner said of the 16 flags against the Doggs, "I'd be real curious to see the yardage on them."

Merriweather capped the scoring with his second TD of the evening on a 10-yard run midway through the third quarter.

Winder-Barrow's leading rusher Jamonte Riden, who left with an ankle injury in the second half and did not return, led the Bulldoggs with 113 yards on 17 carries and a TD.
