Clarke Central Gladiators (8-AAAA)
Coach: Leroy Ryals
Record: 5-1, 5-1 region
Last week: Beat Salem 52-14
Apalachee Wildcats (8-AAAA)
Coach: Shane Davis
Record: 2-4, 2-4 region
Last week: Beat Rockdale Co. 34-21
The Wildcats appear to be headed in the right direction after winning their last two games, but they face a formidable challenge in Clarke Central tonight.
Like Apalachee, the Gladiators are beginning to hit their stride, especially offensively, as they've averaged 43.5 points over their last four games behind running back Quenshaun Watson and quarterback Cameron Johnson.
It will be a big challenge for the Wildcat defense, which got a major boost from linebacker Chris Morris last week with his 10 tackles, one sack, a caused fumble and fumble recovery for a touchdown.
"(Clarke Central is) so big up front, and they're so multiple on offense," Apalachee coach Shane Davis said. "They'll spread you out, give the ball to their running back and make you try to tackle him in space. They're tough to defend."
But as Davis also points out, the best defense for the Wildcats may be their offense, which has rolled up 39.5 points per game in their current winning streak behind the ball control running game of Eric Tanner, Stanley Williams, Zay Henry and quarterback Clint Ashe.
"The best thing in the world for us anytime we play a team with big-play potential is to keep them off the field." Davis said.
Last meeting: Clarke Central won 42-21 last year
