DACULA -- The owner of a Dacula gas station has been indicted on commercial gambling charges after a citizen complained to authorities about an illegal, coin-operated machine on site, officials said Monday.
Duluth resident Amiruddin Jooma, owner of Rans Texaco at 842 Harbins Road, was booked Monday at the Gwinnett County Jail. A Gwinnett grand jury in August indicted Jooma on felony counts of commercial gambling, keeping a gambling place and possession of a gambling device or equipment.
A patron of the convenience store came forward to the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department in March to complain of an illegal machine located just inside the business' entrance, according to a deputy's report.
Investigators found a "slider/push machine" operated with quarters that allowed players an opportunity to be repaid in cash, which is illegal, the report states.
State law forbids payouts of more than $5 from electronic gaming machines. Merchandise awarded as prizes cannot exceed $5 for a single play of the game or device, the law states.
Deputies seized the machine in March, extracted the money and placed it all in evidence, the report states.
Jooma posted $5,000 bond and was released from the Gwinnett County Jail.

Well I guess we can all feel safer now that the sheriff department is so "caught up" with their work that they can bother with this. Just who was being hurt?
