PREP ROUNDUP: GAC wins Region 6-AA softball crown

ATLANTA -- Greater Atlanta Christian pulled out a 3-2 win in the bottom of the eighth inning to capture the Region 6-AA title game over Buford.

GAC, ranked No. 2 in the state, defeated Buford 2-1 in nine innings on Wednesday night in the first game of the championship series.

Using the international tie-breaker, Celine Talley started the inning on second base and moved to third on Natalie deLatour's sacrifice.

Then Brianna Stewart stepped to the plate and lifted a sacrifice fly to score Talley with the winning run and the region title. Sierra Lawrence had a solo homer in the first to give GAC an early 1-0 lead before Lexi Overstreet tied the game in the fourth for Buford with a solo blast. GAC regained the lead in the fourth when Grace DeBoer singled in Stewart, who had doubled to start the inning.

But Overstreet came back in the sixth inning with her second home run of the game for a 2-2 tie. Stewart also picked up the win in relief of deLatour, who started the game for GAC. Bria Bush (6-4) picked up the tough-luck loss for Buford, ranked No. 3 in the state. GAC and Buford will move on to the state tournament next Wednesday and host first-round action.
