Mill Creek, a state quarterfinalist last season, goes on the road in search of its first region win after a stunning loss to Mountain View and a tough loss in a shootout with unbeaten Norcross. The Hawks got a boost in the Norcross game with the return of quarterback John Russ, but they're still without banged-up safety Evan Cavaliere.
"We had a good off week and we're ready to play," Mill Creek head coach Shannon Jarvis said. "We've got to get a region win. This is about us trying to get into the playoffs."
Meadowcreek is still in building mode under second-year coach Deario Grimmage, who measures his team's progress in small steps as it seeks to become competitive in one of the state's toughest regions.
"We've got a long way to go, but at the same time I look at the little things, like not having as many penalties, things like that," Grimmage said. "We're improving each week."
Grimmage has been pleased with versatile tight end/defensive end Kaleb Ross, who has filled in at quarterback for the injury-riddle Mustangs. Fullback Ryan Moore and tight end/defensive end Christopher Herndon, both sophomores, also have played well lately.
Last meeting: Mill Creek won 47-0 last year
Directions to Meadowcreek High School: From I-85, go east on Beaver Ruin Road to Steve Reynolds Boulevard and turn right. School is on the right.
