Decatur Bulldogs (6-AA, Div. A)
Coach: Price Jones
Record: 2-4, 0-1 subregion
Last week: Lost to Buford 66-13
GAC Spartans (6-AA, Div. A)
Coach: Tim Cokely
Record: 5-0, 0-0 subregion
Last week: Had a bye
GAC is off to an impressive start to head coach Tim Cokely's second season, taking an unbeaten record into tonight's subregion opener. The Spartans have been putting up big numbers offensively, averaging 40.4 points on the season and 46.3 in the past three games, wins over three good teams -- Holy Innocents', Westminster and Blessed Trinity. That's bad news for a Decatur team that gave up 66 points to Buford last Friday.
The defense doesn't get as much credit, but it's got plenty of talent like linebacker DaSean Daniels.
"(Daniels) makes all the defensive calls, the defensive signals for us," Cokely said. "He's been really good for us on defense."
Daniels and his teammates had a week off to rest and prepare for the critical subregion schedule, followed by a 6-AA play-in game for a state playoff spot.
"It really isn't about X's and O's at this point of the season," Cokely said of the bye week. "It's about ball security, tackling on defense, focusing on things like that. Things that can win or lose ball games."
GAC plays Clarkston next week, its last tuneup before its toughest test of the season against top-ranked Buford.
Last meeting: GAC won 28-18 last year
