South Gwinnett only has one win this season, but head coach John Small doesn't think his team is as bad as it looks on paper.

"We're a 1-5 team, but we're not a bad 1-5 team," Small said. "We are close to getting over the hump. A lot of teams would have tanked at this point, but we have not."

The Comets get a shot at adding a win tonight when they host young Berkmar.

"Man, they are pretty good. I don't know why they lost the games they lost," Berkmar head coach Jonathan Sanks said. "They have some good players, good coaches and can score some points."

South has been hit by injuries, inexperience and inconsistent play. The Comets lost starting quarterback Jordan Ramey in a preseason scrimmage, but the junior made a return last week. Ramey threw for 177 yards and two touchdowns last week and is expected to see a bulk of the action at QB tonight. Mason Hart, who started the first six games, will return to the secondary. South still has to find a way to avoid the turnovers and penalties that have hurt them in previous games.

"Our biggest Achilles heel is we shoot ourselves in the foot," Small said. "It's a different guy. We have to continue to coach these guys up."

Berkmar's only victory is over winless Meadowcreek. The Patriots feature a very young squad with predominantly underclassmen in the lineup. Quarterback Deion Perry has been the biggest spark on offense, but the Patriots have only scored 15 points in the last four games.

"They are doing some good things and have some explosive players," Small said.

Mikel Sessions has been Berkmar's best player on defense in recent weeks with 20 tackles last Friday and 14 in the previous game. Roger Seton, who injured his knee last week in practice, is out for the season.
