Boy Scouts, others, thank local heroes

LAWRENCEVILLE -- On Sept. 11, Boy Scouts of America Troop 575 and the Philadelphia Winn Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the Revolution joined with fire and rescue personnel from Fire Station No. 10 to honor the local heroes.

The Boy Scouts served the fire and rescue personnel dinner, and a number of public officials addressed those at the gathering, including Lawrenceville Mayor Judy Johnson, Congressman Rob Woodall, Gwinnett County Chairwoman Charlotte Nash and National Daughters of the American Revolution Regent Peggy Freeman.

Cool Girls golf tournament benefits programs

SUWANEE -- A non-profit organization dedicated to the "self-empowerment of girls" has scheduled its inaugural golf tournament, Cool Class, for Nov. 1.

Scheduled for 11 a.m. at The River Club's golf course in Suwanee, there will also be a silent auction and an awards ceremony which will include a presentation of Cool Girls from different schools in Atlanta.

More than 100 supporters are expected to participate. Sponsorship levels begin at $1,200, with proceeds helping the expansion of Cool Girls' programs.

Raffle raises money for charities

LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Gwinnett County Family Violence Task Force has scheduled its inaugural raffle to raise money for local charities.

Raffle tickets are $5 and can be purchased by contacting the Family Violence Task Force at (678) 371-6381 or e-mail jennifer_hope@att.net.

Raffle prizes include a 46-inch RCA television, a $100 gift card for women's self-defense classes and other gift cards as well.

Local shopping destination features women's month

LAWRENCEVILLE -- During October, Discover Mills is presenting "Celebrating Women," a month-long initiative to honor and empower women.

The event, which culminates with a special appearance by Miss Georgia 2011 Michaela Lackey, will also feature style presentations, community awards and women's health awareness programs.

Women from the Red Hat Society plan to visit during the Discover Mills' Red Hat Rendezvous on Tuesday.

The event also features interactive fashion and style experiences hosted by more than 15 retailers from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 13.

Shoppers can sample a range of nutritional and wellness products during the wellness expo Oct. 15.

On Oct. 22, Miss Georgia plans to host Role Models, an event to recognize charitable organizations throughout the Atlanta area.
