ATLANTA -- Mexican soccer legend Cuauhtemoc Blanco will bring his star power to Atlanta Silverbacks Park in October as part of an exhibition between Irapuato FC and the Atlanta Silverbacks on Oct. 19.
"I'm excited to be coming to Atlanta to play the Silverbacks in a couple weeks," Blanco said through a translator. "I know it's going to be a great match, and I look forward to meeting all the Atlanta soccer fans."
Blanco, who is second all-time in goals for the Mexican national team, has been with Iraputo since 2010. He won the Golden Boot award at the 1999 Confederations Cup after scoring six goals in his team's championship-winning run. Blanco scored the decisive goal in the 4-3 win over Brazil to decide the Cup; current Silverbacks coach Jose Manuel Abundis also tallied a goal in the game for the Mexicans.
Blanco is a five-time MVP of the Mexican First Division and won an MLS All-Star Game MVP award. He played with the Chicago Fire of MLS from 2007-2009, scoring 16 goals.
The game will kick off at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 at Atlanta Silverbacks Park. For more information, visit www.atlantasilverbacks.com or call 404-969-4900.
