LAWRENCEVILLE -- One man was killed and another hospitalized when they stumbled into a burglary at a Lawrenceville apartment Sunday night, police said.
Police on Monday identified the slain man as Anthony Shane Augustus, 24, of Lawrenceville.
Both men were assaulted. Augustus was shot in his lower abdomen and later died at Gwinnett Medical Center. The second man, who police did not identify, was transported to the same hospital for treatment and later released, said Lawrenceville police Lt. Gary Kotkiewicz.
Lawrenceville police officers were dispatched about 10 p.m. to the Cedargate Apartments off Longleaf Drive, between Scenic Highway and Stone Mountain Street near downtown Lawrenceville.
Investigators believe the two victims interrupted a burglary in progress inside unit No. 109.
"There was a struggle between the two victims and at least one suspect," Kotkiewicz said.
Kotkiewicz said the crime does not appear random, in that the apartment was specifically targeted. Investigators are following several leads in the case, he said.
