Math coach honored at state level

NORCROSS -- A local math instructional coach was recently recognized at the state level for excellence in the profession.

The Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics selected Kathy Spruiell, a math instructional coach at Stripling Elementary, as recipient of the 2011 Excellence in Mathematics Teaching Award.

Each year the council names the top elementary, middle and high school level educators from around the state who have excelled in their profession.

"I feel honored to have been chosen by and from such a distinguished group of professionals," Spruiell said. "Every year, math teachers from all over the state go above and beyond to advance math instruction and serve as leaders and innovators to support continual improvement in the area."

Spruiell, who has been with GCPS since 2001, earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Birmingham-Southern College. She also holds a master's degree in elementary mathematics education from Walden University and is working on her specialist's degree in teacher leadership from Piedmont College.

According to its website, the Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics aims to "encourage an active interest in mathematics and to act as an advocate for the improvement of mathematics education at all levels."
