LAWRENCEVILLE -- The cause of a fire that ravaged a vacant home in Lawrenceville on Tuesday is unclear, officials said.
An off-duty Gwinnett County firefighter drove by the home on the 1900 block of Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road at about 5:10 p.m. Tuesday, kicking in the front door to check for occupants, spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge said. The firefighter provided frequent updates to the 911 operator and "quickly determined the house was vacant."
"Fire crews battled the blaze from the exterior of the home due to intense fire conditions," Rutledge said.
The exact cause of the fire was undetermined and under investigation Tuesday evening, Rutledge said. Neighbors told firefighters that the house had been vacant for several years.
