POLITICAL NOTEBOOK: GOP's Santorum to appear at Gwinnett forum

Another presidential candidate will be in Gwinnett this week, as part of a series of free public forums.

Rick Santorum, a Pennsylvania senator seeking the Republican nomination for president, is the second candidate to appear at an open forum, after the Georgia Republican Party's 7th District leaders invited the entire slate.

Santorum's forum is scheduled for noon Tuesday at the Gwinnett Place Marriott. It is free and open to the public.

"We are happy to welcome Rick Santorum to Georgia," said GOP District Chairman Jason Thompson. "We want to continue offering access to the public to be able to hear and question the candidates personally, instead of just seeing them on a television debate. We have invited all the candidates to come individually and we are proud to have hosted two forums this month."

Earlier this month, Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich came to the Republican stronghold, appearing before about 500 people.

Congressman launches jobs portal

One of Gwinnett's congressmen is taking another step to help his constituents find jobs.

Hank Johnson, who represents parts of DeKalb, Rockdale and Gwinnett, launched a jobs portal on his website last week.

The jobs center includes links to federal resources and job databases, links to job hunting tips and news of local companies that are hiring, notices of job fairs through metro Atlanta and links to most state job search sites, including Georgia Work Ready, JobsUSAGeorgia.com, Vets Frist and GeorgiaJobsite.com.

"Helping my constituents in these difficult times is my top priority," Johnson, a Democrat said. "Our in-person job fairs have been a huge success, but I wanted to provide a tool constituents could use to help them find work year round."
