Deer hunt begins in Gainesville

GAINESVILLE (AP) — A deer hunt aimed to thinning a thick herd of the animals in Gainesville is under way.

The Times of Gainesville reports (http://bit.ly/uRWwAN) that the hunt began Friday on the campus of Riverside Military Academy, where wildlife officials say that the animals have caused traffic accidents.

The academy's vice president of advancement, Amanda Griffin, said two deer were hit in the past week on a road around the campus.

Five area bow hunters were chosen from a raffle to participate in the hunt, which is scheduled to continue through Saturday. Five more were chosen to participate in a second hunt set for Dec. 22-24.

Both hunts are taking place on the military academy's 202-acre campus.
