Peachtree Ridge's Rives hits 3 to beat GAC

SUWANEE -- Senior Cole Rives nailed a 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds left to lead Peachtree Ridge to a thrilling 67-64 win over two-time Class AA champion Greater Atlanta Christian at the North Gwinnett Bulldog Classic.

GAC (1-1) had tied the game at 64-64 with 12 seconds remaining in OT on Collin Swinton's basket, but that only set up the heroics for Rives to win it for the Lions.

Peachtree Ridge could have put the game away earlier in overtime, but the Lions missed five free throws in the four-minute extra session.

That left the door open for GAC as the Spartans rallied from a four-point deficit in overtime and tied it on Swinton's field goal.

"We played a really good team in GAC and it's a good test early in the season to see where we are," said Peachtree Ridge head coach Keith Arrington. "We kind of got slapped around on Saturday night against Whitefield, so it was good to see us come out and play hard and get the win."

Benny Johnson, who sent the game into overtime tied at 60 on a runner with six seconds left, and Jordan Capps each had 18 points for Peachtree Ridge while Brandon Jack added 11.

Isaiah Wilkins, Cole Hobbs and Swinton each had 14 points for GAC and Delano Spencer had 10.

Peachtree Ridge ran out to a commanding 18-9 lead as the first quarter came to an end, thanks primarily to Jack's eight points that included two three-pointers.

But GAC regained its poise and outscored Peachtree Ridge 15-6 in the second quarter as the Spartans took a 26-24 halftime lead.

Wilkins went to work in the paint with eight points in the quarter, including a layup off an offensive rebound that gave GAC its two-point halftime lead.

Peachtree Ridge built a 47-42 lead heading into the fourth quarter and had a three-point advantage with under three minutes to play before GAC stormed back.

Mill Creek 59, Hillgrove 53

In the first game of the night, Mill Creek recovered from letting an eight-point fourth quarter lead slip away and rallied for a 59-53 win over Hillgrove.

Leading 43-35 heading to the fourth quarter, Mill Creek went cold and watched Hillgrove run off nine straight points to take a 44-43 lead with 4:50 remaining.

But two free throws from Paul Evans regained the lead for Mill Creek at 48-47 with 2:19 left.

After taking a 52-47 lead with 1:32 to play, Mill Creek seven free throws in the final minutes to salt away the six-point win.

Trevon Shaw led Mill Creek (2-0) with 22 points and Jalen Bracey, who was 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final quarter, added 10.

Rhodis Eason led Hillgrove (0-2) with 15 points and Kyle Castlin chipped in 14.
