NORCROSS -- The annual Mayors' Christmas Motorcade has begun, and Norcross officials hope the giving spirit has kicked in for the holidays.

The Georgia Municipal Association program, which was created more than 50 years with help from Gov. Ernest Vandiver, organizes the collection of holiday gifts for patients at Georgia's seven regional mental health hospitals.

For some, who have lived at the hospitals most of their lives with little or no support from family, the annual drive is the only way they will receive a holiday goody.

Officials are encouraging individuals as well as civic organizations, such as scout troops, churches and schools to participate, a press release said.

Donations can be delivered to Norcross City Hall's downstairs lobby at 65 Lawrenceville Street on or before Dec. 5. Or city residents can call for pick-up.

Possible donations include personal care items such as toothbrushes, combs and brushes, clothing, PG- or G-rated videos, board games and other items. They must be new and in good condition, but must not be wrapped.
