LAWRENCEVILLE — Authorities believe a driver ran a red light at a busy Lawrenceville intersection Thursday afternoon, leading to the deaths of two elderly people when he collided with their vehicle.
Thirty-four-year-old Ryan Edward Morton has been charged with two counts of vehicular homicide after he was reportedly driving his white GMC van south on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road and ran the light at Riverside Parkway.
After “glancing off” another vehicle, Morton struck a third car — turning left onto Lawrenceville-Suwanee from Riverside — at the driver’s side door, Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said.
The driver of that vehicle, described as an elderly male, died at the scene. The passenger, an elderly female, was transported to the hospital but later died as a result of her injuries, Smith said.
The victims’ identities were not released Thursday afternoon pending notification of family.
Parts of the intersection were temporarily closed due to the investigation. Drugs or alcohol are not believed to have played a role in the incident, Smith said.
