Wednesday afternoon's tumultuous weather took the life of a Suwanee man as he drove through Forsyth County, officials said.
Forsyth Sheriff's Office spokesman Capt. Tim House said 51-year-old Kevin Neenan was driving his GMC Yukon near the intersection of Brookwood and McGinnis Ferry roads when a large pine tree feel on the vehicle. Neenan was trapped in the car and later pronounced dead at the scene.
"At the time of the accident the county was experiencing a severe thunderstorm with strong winds and heavy rain," House said.
The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for 44 counties in north and central Georgia, including Gwinnett, at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. The watch was effective until 5 p.m.
Gwinnett County was also briefly under a tornado warning -- meaning a tornado has been sighted or is thought to be possible -- until about 2:10 p.m.
Despite all that, spokesman Lt. Eric Eberly said the Gwinnett fire department responded to no major storm-related activity.
Local website LawrencevilleWeather.com said parts of Gwinnett had received as much as half an inch of rain by 5 p.m. Wednesday.
