SUWANEE -- The new section of the Ivy Creek Greenway at George Pierce Park is open to the public.
Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Suwanee park Wednesday morning to official launch the opening of 1.25 miles added to the greenway. In addition to the newly opened section, there is 2.7 miles of the Ivy Creek Greenway running from the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center to the Mall of Georgia.
Construction on the next phase of the greenway -- which will extend the trail from the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center through the woods at the F. Wayne Hill Water Resources Center and toward Interstate 985 -- is scheduled to begin next year.
The trails will eventually link for a total length of seven miles.
Funded by SPLOST and a grant from the Recreational Trails Program, the Ivy Creek Greenway was one of the primary goals of the Gwinnett County Open Space and Greenways Master Plan completed in 2002.
