DACULA -- Football games are made up of many plays. Occasionally, one is made in a do-or-die situation, resulting in joy for one team, and utter heartbreak for the other.
Friday night's first-round game between Dacula and Norcross had that moment late in the fourth quarter.
With the ball on his own 43-yard line, Dacula quarterback Rocky Capobianco faded back and aired it out.
"The snap was good, the blocking was good," Capobianco said. "Their safety crept up on the fake and I just let it go."
Further down the field was Davian McEwan (who kicked a 41-yard field goal earlier in the game) in position to make a play on the ball, only the ball was out in front of him.
"It was ahead of me, but I knew I had to make the catch," McEwan said. "I dove for it and squeezed as hard as I could. I wasn't going to let go."
And, he didn't, as McEwan made the catch, bringing the ball to Norcross' 19-yard line with 1:52 to go in the fourth quarter, setting up the Falcons with a chance for the winning score.
"What can you say," said Dacula head coach Jared Zito. "What an amazing play. Davian has really come on for us and showed a lot of heart."
Then, with 12 seconds to go in the game, Capobianco found the end zone from the 5-yard line, giving Dacula a 17-10 victory, very sweet compared to the 35-7 loss it suffered at the hands of the same Norcross team to begin the season.
"Our team has gotten better with each game this year," Zito said. "It's a real credit to our kids and our coaching staff."
Zito said the catch where McEwan made the diving catch was the right play called at the right time.
"We were waiting for the right down and distance," he said. "What a great throw and catch."
With those two plays forever entered into Dacula lore, the Falcons now turn their focus to Newnan, which upset Valdosta to advance to the second round, sending waves of excitement through the crowd as it realized the second round would be at home as well. With that news, Zito challenged the student section to find two buddies each and have them in the stands next Friday.
