STONE MOUNTAIN -- Three children were burned in a late afternoon fire at their Stone Mountain home Friday.
The children -- ages 6, 9 and 15 -- suffered "moderate to significant burns" to their upper bodies, Gwinnett fire department spokesman Lt. Eric Eberly said. They were transported to Grady Burn Center after being treated at the scene and are expected to recover.
Firefighters arrived at the home on the 1200 bock of Tara Court at about 3:30 p.m. and were met at the door by the children, who were home alone during the time of the fire. The children's mother was at work during the incident, Eberly said.
Investigators have determined that the fire was caused by food left unattended on the stove.
The blaze caused "significant" damage to the kitchen and smoke damage to the remainder of the home.
