WARNER ROBINS — Military officials say most of the 260 Robins Air Force Base workers offered an initial wave of buyouts in a cost-cutting initiative had accepted the offer by a Thursday deadline.
The Telegraph of Macon reports that the buyouts are part of an effort to cut the Robins work force, which totals 23,000, by 600 jobs. Each worker would get about $25,000 to retire or quit, with the figure varying some depending on length of service.
A massive restructuring plan was announced earlier this month.
Maj. Gen. Robert McMahon has said it could mean that 516 civilian positions will be eliminated on base, including many vacant positions.
He said the base is looking to ultimately slash 600 staffers over the next fiscal year by offering the buyouts and other incentives.
