South Gwinnett's Kyle Wright (11)

Region: 8-AAAAA

Coach: Scott Bracco

2010-11 record: 19-7

Returning regulars:

Logan Adams, 6-6, Jr.

Qiydar Davis, 6-4, Sr.

Kyle Wright, 5-10 Jr.

Others to watch:

Simeon Dennis, Sr., 6-3

Cam Moye, Soph., 5-11

Christian Buckmire, Sr., 5-8

Ray Mobley, Sr., 6-3

Outlook: The Comets hope to make it to the state tournament after promising seasons ended just short in Scott Bracco's first two years as coach. South finished first in the regular season a year ago, but was stunned by upstart Archer in the region quarterfinals. Back are first-team all-region choices Logan Adams and Qiydar Davis. Adams, a junior, averaged 15.2 points and 10.7 rebounds last season. Davis, a senior, averaged 17.6 points and 9.9 rebounds.

Worth noting: South added Simeon Dennis, who was a second-team all-region choice last season while playing for Central Gwinnett. He averaged 15.2 points and 5.4 rebounds a year ago as a junior. With Dennis joining Adams and Davis, the Comets have a potent scoring trio. Getting them the ball will be the job of junior Kyle Wright and sophomore Cam Moye.

Outlook: South made its first state tournament appearance last season since finishing as Class AAAAA runner-up in 2006 and 2007, but graduated four starters from that team. Gone are Tina Odume, who led the team with 14 points and 10.4 rebounds per game, as well as Kiara Baker, who averaged 12.7 points and 4.1 assists. Odume was a first-team all-region pick, while Baker made the second team. Of the returnees, senior Tiffany Jenkins and juniors Colette Onenda and Alysia Johnson contributed the most last season. Jenkins and Johnson both averaged 5.2 rebounds and Onenda contributed 2.5 assists.

Worth noting: The Comets started 1-5 against a rugged early schedule and then won 13 of their next 16 games, including a victory over region champ Brookwood in the final game of the regular season. As a No. 3 seed, South gave Alpharetta a battle in the first round of the state tournament before losing 40-37. Jaime Kruppa, who played on South's unbeaten 1995 state championship team, is in her third season coaching the Comets after assisting Mike Allison previously.
