Basketball preview: Mountain View Bears

Mountain View's Tynisha Bledsoe

Mountain View's Tynisha Bledsoe

Region: 7-AAAAA

Coach: Kyle Keefer

2010-11 record: 3-21

Returning regulars:

Caleb Grant, Jr., 6-5

Others to watch:

Ryan Gibbs, Sr., 6-2

Sean Starke, Sr., 6-0

Jordan Strickland, Sr., 6-3

Outlook: The Bears had 13 seniors on last season's team, leaving first-year coach Kyle Keefer with a major rebuilding job. The hardest to replace will be Drew Bollier and Troy Taylor, three-year starters who combined for 27 points per game last season. Bollier was an honorable mention all-region choice. Caleb Grant and Ryan Gibbs are the only returning players from last season.

Worth noting: Keefer takes over for Robert Perryman, who retired. The Bears were 14-13 in their first year, but struggled last season after moving up from Class AAA to Class AAAAA. Mountain View was winless in one of the state's toughest regions. Keefer, a Michigan native, was a standout quarterback at Hillsdale College, where he holds passing records. He has coached football as well as basketball since moving to Georgia.

Coach: Jackie Lindquist

2010-11 record: 3-22

Returning regulars:

Tynisha Bledsoe, Sr., 5-7

Bria Virgil, Jr., 5-11

Others to watch:

Jade Manning, Jr., 5-3

Trinity Rogers, Jr., 5-11

Outlook: The Bears are still a young team, but appear ready to take a step forward after struggling a year ago in their first year of Class AAAAA competition. Tynisha Bledsoe is the only senior returnee for the 3-year-old school. She averaged a team-best 7.6 points last year and was an honorable mention all-region choice. Juniors Bria Virgil, Kiana Carmichael, Jade Manning and Trinity Rogers also bring experience.

Worth noting: Mountain View should get a big scoring boost from junior Kelsey Hutchins, who was ineligible for varsity competition last season after transferring. She led Dacula Middle School to a Western Division title in 2009.
