Basketball preview: Mill Creek Hawks

Mill Creek's Sierra Menzies

Mill Creek's Sierra Menzies

Region: 7-AAAAA

Coach: Chad Rogers

2010-11 record: 18-12

Returning regulars:

Paul Evans, Sr., 6-0

Daniel Loudermilk, Sr., 6-7

Jalen Bracey, Sr., 6-0

Others to watch:

Trevon Shaw, Jr., 6-2

Elijah Bryant, Jr., 6-2

Daniel Braschler, Sr., 6-4

Kunle Akinmola, Sr., 6-3

Outlook: The Hawks made it to the Elite Eight last with a late-season run and return five players Paul Evans, Jalen Bracey, Elijah Bryant, Daniel Loudermilk and Daniel Braschler who started games a year ago. But Mill Creek must replace first-team all-region players Brandon Hayman and Ronald Wamer, who combined for 25 points, 14 rebounds and five assists last season. Evans, a three-year starter, averaged 10 points and teamed with Bracey for five assists per game. Shaw averaged 8.7 points and coach Chad Rogers' is expecting a breakout offensive season from Loudermilk.

Worth noting: A rugged schedule toughened Mill Creek for tournament play last season and the Hawks will again be well tested. A victory over Collins Hill in the region quarterfinals earned Mill Creek a state berth a year ago and the Hawks also beat North Gwinnett before losing to eventual state champ Norcross for the region title. Victories over Walton and Roswell followed in the state tournament before a loss to defending champ Milton.

Outlook: Mill Creek made it to the Final Four for the second time last season and has made it to the Sweet 16 for six straight seasons under coach Ashley Phillips. The Hawks were up-and-down with a young team most of the season, then put everything together to make their tournament run. Jasmine Carter led the team in scoring as a freshman at 14.5 points and also contributed 4.9 rebounds. She was a first-team all-region choice and scored 32 points in the Hawks' quarterfinal victory over Roswell.

Worth noting: Tamarr Williams was third on the team in scoring last year at 7.3 points per game and teams with Nadiya Miller, who averaged 5.3 points, to give the Hawks consistent 3-point shooting. Sierra Menzies and Alesia Fagan return at point guard after combining for 10.2 points and 4.9 assists last season. India Dillard is an inside presence, having averaged 4.3 points and 4.8 rebounds as a sophomore.
