BERKMAR PATRIOTS
BOYS
Region: 8-AAAAA
Coach: Greg Phillips
2010-11 record: 20-8
Returning regulars:
Yonel Brown, Sr., 5-9
Brandon Thompson, Sr., 6-0
Tim Rowe, Soph., 6-9
Others to watch:
Adonai Rogers, Sr., 6-2
Tyler Rogers, Sr., 6-5
C.J. Foster, Jr., 6-2
Joseph Gordon, Fr., 5-9
Outlook: The dynamic duo of Yonel Brown and Brandon Thompson returns as Berkmar shoots for a third straight trip to the state tournament. Brown, named region player of the year, averaged a team-best 16.4 points and 3.1 assists last season. Thompson averaged 14.7 points and 4.5 rebounds. The other returning starter is 6-foot-9 Tim Rowe, who led with team with 7.2 rebounds per game as a freshman a year ago. Adonai Rogers, an honorable mention all-region pick, transferred from Shiloh and freshman Joseph Gordon led Sweetwater Middle School to the county title last season.
Worth noting: Greg Phillips, a former assistant at Norcross, was named 8-AAAAA coach of the year after leading the Patriots to the region title in his second year. But Berkmar's season came to an end in the first round of the state tournament with a 57-56 upset loss to Roswell, coached by Phillips' older brother Ty.

GIRLS
Region: 8-AAAAA
Coach: Todd McCutcheon
2010-11 record: 18-11
Returning regular:
Jazmine Green, Sr., 5-9
Others to watch:
Deijah Cooke, Jr., 5-7
Nina Williams, Jr., 5-7
Guisela Padilla, Jr., 5-6
JaTaja Washington, Jr., 5-8
Outlook: The Patriots must rebuild around three-year starter Jazmine Green after losing six seniors from last season's state tournament team. Green was second on the team in rebounding a year ago with 6.6 per game and will have to carry more of a scoring load this season after the graduation of standouts Ka'Vonne Towns, 6-foot-4 Teanna Robinson, Shamicka Martin and Kenisha Watkins. Green is the team's lone senior this season.
Worth noting: Berkmar made it to the state tournament last season despite losing Towns at midseason to a knee injury. The four-year starter was averaging 17.1 points and 3.6 assists through 11 games when her high school career came to an end.
