Lawrenceville — LAWRENCEVILLE — The “suspicious package” that briefly shut down a major Gwinnett intersection Wednesday turned out to be an accidentally abandoned briefcase, officials said.

Gwinnett County police’s explosive ordinance disposal (EOD) unit responded to the Shell gas station near the intersection of U.S. Highway 29 and Sugarloaf Parkway around lunchtime Wednesday after the briefcase was left next to the fuel pumps, spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said. The intersection was closed to traffic.

The owner of the briefcase returned to the scene to reclaim it “a few minutes” after EOD units arrived. Police used a robot to investigate the briefcase before releasing it to its owner, Smith said.

“The intersection was reopened almost immediately,” Smith said. “The intersection was only shut down for a few minutes.”
