Slate of Veterans Day events set for Friday

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Gwinnett residents will have lots of opportunities to honor veterans this Veterans Day.

County officials have planned a ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday at the Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial on the grounds of the county justice center in Lawrenceville.

Georgia Gwinnett College President Dan Kaufman, a retired Army brigadier general who will host his own flag-raising ceremony at the college earlier in the day, is scheduled to give the keynote address.

The Rotary Club of South Gwinnett has plans to honor World War II veterans at a noon event at the Atlanta Marriott Gwinnett Place in Duluth.

Later that evening, Duluth's American Legion Post 251 will hold a flag retirement ceremony at 5 p.m. The public is invited not only to witness the rare ceremony but also to bring their own unserviceable flags to be disposed of properly.

The post is located at 2760 Duluth Highway.

An hour and a half later, the nonprofit Sentinels of Freedom will host a fundraiser to help disabled veterans, including Purple Heart Recipient Staff Sgt. Jeremy Wilczek.

U.S. Rep. Rob Woodall will deliver the keynote address at the event, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the 1818 Club, located at the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce building in Duluth.
