ATLANTA — Opponents of a policy that effectively bans illegal immigrants from Georgia's most competitive state colleges and universities are asking the university system to overturn it.
Two young people addressed a committee of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia Tuesday. They argued that the policy unfairly excludes a whole group of students and is not well-founded. The board last year adopted the policy amid public concerns about illegal immigrants in the university system. It bars any state college or university from admitting illegal immigrants if it has turned away academically qualified applicants in the prior two years. That includes five schools. A coalition of groups opposing the policy also held a news conference Tuesday afternoon outside the Capitol to urge the Regents to rescind the policy.More like this story
