LAWRENCEVILLE -- On Monday the professional theater community celebrated the annual Suzi Bass Awards held at Oglethorpe University. The event recognizes the hard work that live theaters and artists contribute to create amazing performances. This year the Aurora Theatre won three awards after being nominated for 16.
The Aurora won for features actor in a musical, ensemble in play and costume design in play.
"We had a really good time," said Anthony Rodriguez, Aurora's producing artistic director. "It's always a wonderful experience to share this night with colleagues, board members and the theater community. We took home three Suzis and we can't complain about that."
The theater was nominated in several categories for its performances of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and "Singin' in the Rain."
"We had strong talent in the shows," Rodriguez said. "Those were two shows that had great production values, as we try to do for every show."
As for the next round of awards, the Aurora has already received three "Suzi Recommendations" for "A Chorus Line," "Underneath the Lintel" and "Gray Area."
"We do the best we can and hope that people recognize the hard work we put in," Rodriguez said. "The next show we can be recommended for is 'A Body of Water' in January. We'll see how the rest of the season goes."
The Horizon Theatre took home 10 awards and the Alliance Theatre won seven.
