ATLANTA -- Gov. Nathan Deal has appointed Gale Buckner as the new commissioner of the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice.
Buckner currently serves on the State Board of Pardons and Paroles. She replaces Amy Howell, who will take the role as general counsel at the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities.
Buckner's vacancy on the parole board will be filled by James Mills, who was named to the board in September.
Buckner was appointed to the parole board by Gov. Sonny Perdue in 2005 and she served as vice chair and chair of the agency. She earned a bachelor's degree in urban life at Georgia State University and a Master of Public Administration from Brenau University. Buckner is a resident of Chatsworth.
