COLUMBUS -- Firefighters who battled a massive weekend blaze at the vacant Swift Mill in Columbus say hot spots could burn for weeks.
Fire Marshal Ricky Shores said there are no reported injuries or reports of other buildings being damaged.
The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports that the mill went up in flames late Saturday. Firefighters circled the structure to save adjacent businesses and locomotives in the rail yard behind the old mill.
With flames shooting more than four stories high during the fire, authorities said embers soared overhead and raised the risk of starting fires elsewhere.
Jeff Meyer, chief of Columbus Fire and Emergency Medical Services, said the embers can travel for miles.
Authorities in nearby Phenix City, Ala., were alerted to the danger of other fires starting from the burning embers.
