Senior night at Collins Hill also means the final high school game for 17 Meadowcreek seniors. Of that group, only four -- Julian Harris, Rayquan Sam, Alex Steele and Carlton Cornell -- have been in the program since their freshman season.
Second-year Mustang head coach Deario Grimmage is out to curb the program's transient nature, a trend set in motion long before his arrival.
"We tried to paint a picture of the kind of commitment it takes to be successful in Gwinnett County (at Tuesday's practice)," Grimmage said. "I asked how many seniors had been a part of the program since their freshman year and four kids raised their hands. I asked how many since your sophomore year and three more raised their hands. ... We're playing teams with seniors who have been together since the sixth or seventh grade or longer."
One of those programs is Collins Hill, a steady winner in Gwinnett over the past 15 years.
The Eagles, even with last week's loss at Norcross, have clinched another playoff berth after bouncing back from a 1-3 start. Quarterback Brett Sheehan has turned the offense around, but turnovers were costly last week. The defense, led last week by Sam Batiste and Andrew Everett, must play better than it did against the Blue Devils, who scored on five straight possessions to turn a 21-7 deficit into a 42-21 win.
The playoff road is brutal for Collins Hill -- a first-round matchup at nationally ranked Grayson.
Last meeting: Collins Hill won 36-0 last year
